Lady Jenks writes, “Going through some papers recently, I found the enclosed poem which Walter had written.”
Desert War Requiem Harvest
Ripening corn like the desert waste
Leads to death with cutting haste
The combine mangles out its thresh ingrained the flies of human flesh
The dust of conflict, man to bread
The baker selects the corn for flour
God chooses the soldier’s bower
By Captain Walter Drysdale, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Walter commanded the Anti Tank Company of 16th Infantry Brigade at the battle of Sidi Barrani, Western Desert, in December 1940.
