“After completing a PhD in energy use in buildings in 1981, I joined Arup in London working on several large building design projects in the UK. In 1988 I was offered a two-year transfer to San Francisco and I never returned. I was enticed by the climate and the ‘go for it’ culture of the Bay Area. I retired from Arup at the end of 2018, although I still consult and teach. I keep myself occupied by playing saxophone, cycling and foil windsurfing.”
