Donald writes to say, “As a recent graduate in the summer of 1958, I worked as a voluntary labourer in a house building project in Grossburgwedel, near Hanover in Germany. It had been established by Sue Ryder for displaced people from Poland and East Germany. On one of her visits she was accompanied by Group Capt the Lord Cheshire of Woodhall, VC, OM, DSO, DFC (Chatham 36), as they were amalgamating at that time to form the Ryder Cheshire Foundation. I was very glad to meet these two pioneers, remarkable for their care for forgotten people.”
