Edward Spurr (Grafton 02)

After many years working as an art dealer at some of the world’s most famous contemporary art galleries, Ed founded Ilex Studio, last autumn. His first product, the Acorn Vase has been very well received. The Acorn Vase allows one to grow elegant oak trees from acorns at home. The design stems from a combined love of beautiful things and nature, both of which he was exposed to at an early age at Stowe. First conceived as gifts for his artists, Ed feels the vases will have wide appeal. He writes, “They’re perfect for design enthusiasts, tree lovers, urban dwellers and also families with children; allowing everyone to bring the magic of nature into their home and hopefully oak trees for future generations.” Ed won a young entrepreneur competition in the Guardian, which was judged by Touker Suleyman of Dragon’s Den fame. The vase can be found in a variety of shops, from the garden shop at Kew Gardens to high end design shops such as Alex Eagle and Another Country.
